Healthy Swimming in Western Australian Waterways

As a recreational water user in Western Australia it is important to be aware of the common health risks that may be associated with popular swimming locations such as our beaches, estuaries and rivers, because you are the best person to make a judgement if it is safe to swim at a particular swimming spot at a particular time.

The information on this website will help you decide where and when you would like to go swimming this summer.

Healthy Swimming Tips:

After summer rainfall (>10mm), rain collects pollutants from the streets and gardens before it flushes into our waterways via the stormwater system. This can make the water unsafe for swimming, especially if you put your head under or swallow the water. As a precaution avoid swimming:

  • 1 day after heavy rainfall in coastal beaches.
  • Up to 3 days after heavy rainfall in river and estuarine waters.
